How has it all changed

Beitrag von D P D »

Hi
I am sure that we all have our views on how Thassos has changed over the years, good or bad, we have been travelling there since 1987 mainly to Golden Beach and as you can imagine have seen a huge change, what do you think has caused this? Is it just progress, is it all good, does it all benefit the locals?
Personally I do not believe that the changes have been good for the resort, but then again I am getting older. I do put a lot of the blame on the tour operator and for this reason have not used one for many a year.
To me English bars are a no no, loud music in a resort like this are a no no.
May be this will get some seasoned Thassos travellers interested

Hi
I find it hard to believe that no one has any opinions on how Thassos has changed over the years good or bad, this forum used to be full of keen Thassos fans with different opinions on this great island.
Maybe it is just used now to advertise car boot sales and things for sale, I can remember the day when it was used for a great source of information for travellers.
The good old days.

Hi
I too have been going to Thassos and Golden Beach since 1987 so have seen the same changes that you have, I have lost count now how many times i have visited the island, it is sad to say that I no longer go because of the island, I go because of the friends I have there now.
I have not been on here for some time now but some may remember that I am a hugh fan of the Enavlion and always stay there when we visit, we have known Niko & Roula since their children were knee high, now they are running the joint.
I agree, English Bars, Lound music on the beach, all inclusive Hotels, non of this is needed, but then again it is probably just progress.
It is also very sad to see places like the George Hotel closing because of a tour operator, how I do miss Stavros in his bar (happy days)
My favourite time to visit now is winter when the carnivals are on.

First Visit was1997

Beitrag von STEVE »

Hi DPD

Sorry I could not respond pronto . This site has been very very quiet recently so not looking as often as I used to. I'm sure you will get a lot more feedback in time.

I first visited the island in 1997 and made our 11th visit staying at Golden Beach 2 years ago, on the last week of the season.

It was very quiet and a lot of places closed early but looking at the webcam with all the beach umbrellas I would not like to visit in the high season.

Thassos has changed since I first went. The change is just how it has progressed but some might not think it is positive progression but a lot may think it has changed for the better, just opinion.

However the great "golden" beach is still the same with those waves crashing in and the Mountains in the background still look as good as ever
http://www.thassos-forum.de/images/postpics/103808.jpg

and getting down on the beach when it is quiet for sunrise was still as good as ever in 2013.

I would love to be on a plane tomorrow if I had the chance with a room at the Emerald and old fiat Panda to use for a couple of weeks and chillax.

I had my 60th birthday evening meal at the Enavlion. Yes the place is quality both food and service but was on a Saturday night and we ended up sitting by a number of British people now living on the island with loud voices who spent the night talking about work on their homes, plumbing down pipes etc so it was not a jolly atmosphere. My 50th at the old Zorbas in Thassos Town was truly brilliant in comparison.

Viglas was still as good as when we first went and Fedra's was still spot on. Best night we had when we got a taste of the old atmosphere was a meal at the Theagenis at Skala Potamia with live music and a few drinks at Tommos.

Enjoyed the trip up to Panagia but one of our earlier trips included walking back down hill to Golden Beach which was fantastic but no longer have the young or rather the middle-aged legs so we got a taxi.

We would never book all inclusive on the island as getting about and having a choice where to eat or not to eat is part of the holiday and sitting at the edge of the beach with moon rising above the sea whilst enjoying a meal and beer stands out in the memory.

I wish I had found Thassos earlier and got a few more visits under the belt but in my opinion Thassos is still pretty good. Try a visit to Lanzarote or Zante and you will soon get the buzz back to get back to Thassos.

For the future what would be great is opening up of Kavala airport to get more flights from UK more customers for the George and other possibly struggling hotels perhaps even have a four day break option and other flights through out the year.

I would love to have my Christmas dinner at Golden Beach then walk it off with a stroll down to Skala Potamia even if it was freezing cold. If only it was possible.

Now back to the rugby. and hope to get back to Thassos in 2016

Best regards

Steve

Hi
It's amazing with over a 1000 views that no one has an opinion on how Thassos has changed.
This forum used to be so active now so boring

Facebook and other more "instant" social media platforms have taken a lot of interest from sites like this David D. Change is everywhere, not just Thassos.
We've been 16 times now, staying in Limenas but traveling round a bit too so have seen many changes.
We just figure that there's nothing we can do about it so just go with the flow and always find new places whilst sometime deciding not to return to others. :)
Let the good times roll........

God, I knew I was getting old Oggy.
I have to go on line now and ask someone to be my friend!
Facebook is taking over. I still like these old fashion forums.
I do agree I have never found anywhere with the same feel as Thassos but Thassos does not have the same feel as 15yrs ago, but then again neither do I.

Hello,

Only been visiting since 1999 so comparative newbies to the rest of you! We have managed 14 visits in that time though and as most people yes we have seen massive changes in Golden Beach (where we stay) & parts of Thassos Town.
That said as other posters have said compared to other Greek islands/resorts it is still relatively quiet (we have only done Kefalonia, Crete, Halkadiki and Perea before our Thessaloniki flights though).
We hardly ever do the package anymore so this summer decided to tack on 5 days in Samothraki having always looked at it from Golden Beach and hoping it may be like Thassos in the old days.
Whilst it was beautiful in its own way we did not fall in love with it as we did Thassos.
So despite all the changes we will still return!

living the dream

Beitrag von mickyg10 »

I to have only been going to Thasos since 1998, I loved it then and still love this place. we even travel in the winter when everything is closed which for me and the wife its fantastic time of the year. we have even driven with the dogs 1880 miles, the only thing that changes on this island are as far as I am concerned are some new hotels different shops and euro bad move but each to there own. their is a couple of new beaches which I am saving for another time. there is a road up to kastro now which is impressive. Thassos relaxes me so much which starts on the ferry with a beer or coffee just watching that port come in to view. now we have a piece of land and good old static caravan living the dream. next trip march 2017

Hi Micky - how did you get the static caravan on there? I'm very interested, also where to get one in the first place.... transporting it from UK is a bit pricey. I got my plot so that's a start....
Changes, yes, as some said - a) Facebook is so much faster and b) changes are everywhere, such if life. Thassos still offers so so many lovely places away from the bars and people. x Tina
